TED talk by David Bolinsky: 細胞を観るアニメーション：Amazing visual journey through a cell

CGアニメーターのDavid Bolinskyが、細胞の中を見せるビデオを、分子細胞生物学者とコラボしてつくりました。学生さんに、より分かりやすく細胞の信じられないくらいの複雑さや精密さ、それらからくる美しさ、を感じてもらうためだそうです。こういう情報に日々どっぷりつかっているひとも思わずため息が出てしまう映像です。

CG animator David Bolinsky shows an amazing videos describing how the inside of a cell looks like. He created these in collaboration with cellular and molecular biologists to help students visualize how incredibly complex and precise cells are and feel how beautiful they are altogether. Even people who are immersed in such information every day cannot help absorbed in awe into these images...!

衝突する銀河：Galaxy crash

サクラサク：Cherry blossom

いやあ、日本の春って、本当にいいものですね。新しい何かが弾け出てくるような新鮮さと言うか、初々しさがあります。新緑と共にフレッシュ スタートをきり、自然と同調して暮らしているのですよね。

Japanese spring is special. It is a time of fresh starts. New appointments or school years start on April 1st. People are living in annual cycles similar to those of plants and others in nature.




そんな季節の象徴と言えばさくらなのですが、これは開花の時期的にも、期間限定のはかなさが物事の始まりや終わりを意味するように感じられる点でも、ぴったりなわけですよね。

Cherry blossom is the symbol of such starts (and ends, perhaps, because of falling of the petals). In most places cherries flower in late March or early April, just about when people close or open one chapter of their lives. You can find many of them in school yards and along the river, etc.



今年はさくらが見事だったようです。満開が晴天続きでずいぶん長く楽しめた、とか。花見も盛り上がったようです。ああ、夜桜等見に行きたいです。

In the heights of the bloom, people go for a special kind of picnics called "HANAMI (literally, 'flower watch')." It has become rather an excuse to get full and drunk than anything else, but the tradition can be nice. You can do it either during day or night. Cherry blossom at night is particularly beautiful.

砂漠は唄う：Singing dunes

マルコ ポーロがユーラシア大陸を横断してついには日本にまで来てしまうその途中で、砂漠が歌を歌っていることに気がついたそうです。低波長の、飛行機が飛行中に出す音と似ている、不思議な音。世界で、３５カ所ぐらいの砂漠や砂丘で、個々それぞれの音が聞けるそう。島根県でも聞けるそうですよ。

When Marco Polo traveled across the Eurasian continent to the Far East, he noticed that desserts sing. These sounds in low frequencies are apparently similar to the sound flying aircrafts make. There are about 35 desserts or dunes around the world that make its own unique sound. You can hear it in Shimane, Japan, too.

砂粒の大きさと性質（シリカ質が多いとかの）、そして湿度などの条件が揃った時にだけ出るそうです。その原理は、複雑物質の物理学として、いろいろな研究室が勉強しているそう。そんな研究者の一人が作ったビデオがこれです。

There are some common requirements for sands to make sounds. The size and composition of the sand (e.g. silica content), as well as the humidity. The underlying cause is a hot topic in the physics of complex materials and studied by many labs around the globe. One of such researchers made the video attached below.



風が強いときは、人が歩かなくても音がするそうです。そんな砂漠のコーラス、聞いてみたいですね。
When it is very windy, desserts sing on their own. I would love to hear such a song of sands!

海の生き物：David Gallo shows wonder of life underwater

海洋学者、探検家の David Gallo が真っ暗な深海に棲む魅惑の生き物（ちょっとおおげさにポジティブな形容詞って、日本語にするの難しいですね、笑）を披露します。発光してきらきらと光っていてきれいです。後半ではそれほどは深くない海の生き物の不思議なトリックを見せてくれます。びっくりのからくりです。見えなくなるタコなんて、どうですか？

The oceanographer David Gallo shows amazing creatures from the darkness of the deep sea. They are often beautifully florescent with bio-illuminescence. He then presents wonders from shallower sea. Look at these little monsters doing amazing tricks! How about these invisible octopuses?

アルバトロスの求愛ダンス Albatross' courtship ritual

もう日にちがずれてしまいましたが、バレンタインでしたね、本日は。日本に比べると、まったく盛り上がりに欠ける西洋諸国ですが、こんな機会に是非載せたかったのが鳥類の求愛ダンスです。ヒトのものも訳分からなくて面白いですが（笑）、鳥たちのメイティングへの賭け引きは驚くほど複雑ですね。こちらは、Laysan Albatross のそれです。 ハワイなどに生息する、アルバトロスにしては小さめの海鳥だそうです。
Although it has just passed, today was Valentine's Day. Compared to Japan, the US or European countries are not as hyped up with it, but on occasions like this I wanted to put up scenes from avian courtship rituals. Humans carry out rather confusing ones as well (laugh), but birds undertake quite complicated communications on the way to mating. Here is the one between two Laysan Albatrosses. They are relatively small Albatross species, which can be found around Hawaii, etc.

地球外生物のいそうな星

Enceladus は、土星の６番目に大きな月です。温暖な環境のうえ、水、有機物質（炭素、水素、窒素、酸素）が存在するから、太陽系で一番地球外生物のいそうな星に選ばれました。氷で包まれた、美しい星です。

雪の結晶

今年はよく雪が降ります。
雪の結晶に科学的ロマンを感じるひとは多いと思います。幾何学的な形も美しいし、種類の多さも興味深い。それが水の化学のきまぐれでできてしまうのだから、自然の遊び心が見え隠れするわけです。完全に同一の結晶は二度できない、という唯一無二さにもそそられますね。
