"Country" by Keith Jarret

ジャズ／クラッシック ピアニストのキース ジャレットさんによる ”カントリー” というこの曲は、しみじみと温かいドイツ映画、「マーサの幸せレシピ」で出会いました。仕事に没頭している完全主義者のマーサは、ある日家族の不幸で姪を引き取る事になります。現実っぽい甘くない状況を経て、だんだんと共同生活に慣れていく過程で、だんだんと人生にも心を開いていく、というお話。よく聞いた事があるような展開かもしれませんが、この映画は全体ですごくバランスがとれていて、魅せてくれるのです。きれいな画像、真実味のある演技、すてきな音楽．．．見る度に、ほんわかとして、おいしいご飯が食べたくなる、そんな映画なのです。

I got to know this song via the adorable German movie "Mostly Martha (Bella Martha)." It was a story about a work-obsessed perfectionist chef Martha, who ended up taking care of her niece and slowly warmed up to life. The plot may not be the most original, but overall it is so well done - lovely music, pictures, and believable acting, and it makes you so hungry for good food and slice of life!

Film song : "Plastic Jesus" from Cool Hand Luke

This song from this scene is also very memorable. My dear Mr. Paul Newman sung it in Cool Hand Luke（1967）with a banjo. This movie is definitely one of my favorites - highly recommended! It was made in 1957 as a folk song.

この曲、このシーンも忘れられません。親愛なるポール ニューマン氏が、暴力脱獄 (すごい邦題ですな）こと Cool Hand Luke（1967）でバンジョー片手に唄ってます。本当に些細な事から刑務所に入れられた主人公ルークは、どんなに押さえつけられてもにやっと笑ってクールに理不尽さをかわしていくのですが、権威側は執拗にからみます。だんだんと追いつめられた彼が、こぼれるように唄うのがこの曲。これ、すごくいい映画です。まだの人は、是非！

Film song : "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's

そしてもちろん外せないのは、”ティファニーで朝食を” のためにつくられたこの曲です。意識をすっとしてくれるシーンですね。これ、高校などで、ギターの課題に出たりしませんでした？私たちが唄うと、どうもオードリー ヘップバーンのようにはいきませんでした。違う曲に聞こえる。。。

And of course, this one really stays in one's mind. Absorbs your heart. Many of us have tried to play it with a guitar (was a school assignment for me), but no one can sing like Audrey! Made for this movie in 1961.

Film song : "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca

映画で見た心に残る音楽シーンってありますよね。名画カサブランカに出てくるこの曲は大好きな物の一つです。Dooley Wilsonがジャズで As Time Goes By を歌ってくれます。もとは１９３１年にブロードウェイ用につくられたらしいです。（映画より１１年早いですね。）フランク シナトラをはじめ、何度も歌い直されています．．．

There are some classic musical moments in movies. One of my favorites is this one from Casablanca. Jazzy "As Time Goes By" by Dooley Wilson. The song was originally made in 1931, 11 years prior to the movie. It was originally a Broadway tune, apparently. Frank Sinatra et al. also sung it nicely...

映画「おくりびと」：The Departures

｢おくりびと」を観ました。とっても良かったです。いろんな要素でしっくりじっくりきました。少し不思議だったのは、あの職業に対してそこまで負の反応があった、という事なのですが。（そんなものですか？）何でもこの映画が出てから納棺師やその他の葬儀関係で働く人たちの表情が明るくなった、とか。（笑）

The other day I saw "OKURIBITO (The Departures)." Yes, the one which got the Oscar for the foreign film category this year. I liked so many aspects of this movie. By the way, I was a bit surprised by the reactions of people against the occupation. Is it so bad really? I heard, though, that since this movie came out, people working in the funeral industry are happier with their jobs! (laugh)



それにしても、モックン歳とらないですね。（笑）それから、あの会社の入ってる洋館、大好きです。ああいう所に住みたいです！

By the way, the actor who played the main character used to be a teen idol in Japan. I hadn't seen him for so long, but he does not age...! Also, I loved the building of the NK Agent company. I wish I could live in a house like that!

映画 ”紅の豚”："Porco Rosso"

実は、宮崎駿の映画で一番好きなのは「紅の豚」です。これこそ、大人のためのアニメですよね。

Actually my favorite Miyazaki movie is "Porco Rosso." This one really is for adults, I think.



出てくるキャラが、すべてかっこいい！飛行機の修理屋のおっちゃんまで！（笑）ジーナさんはもちろん、フィオはかっこかわいいし、もちろん豚さんはこのうえなくかっこいい。いい台詞も多いですよね。「飛べない豚は、ただの豚だ。」「あらあら、偉い人が集まって、何の相談？けんかは嫌よ。」「ポルコ〜、おはなしきかせて〜。」（笑）エンディングの曲もいいですよね。ジーナさん／加藤登紀子がしっとりと歌ってくれます。

Every character is cool, even the airplane mechanic! (laugh) Gina is cool, Fio is cute-cool, and of course, Porco is super cool. (laugh) There are lots of nice lines, too. "A pig is a pig if he doesn't fly." I love the ending theme, too. Gina/Tokiko Kato sings the song so chic!

映画 ”となりのトトロ”：”My Neighbor Totoro”

ついこの間、友人の４歳になる娘ちゃんと一緒に、”となりのトトロ”を観ました。本当に久しぶりに観たのですが（十年ぶりぐらい？）、そのすばらしいできばえに感服でした。なんてかわいらしくて、細部にまで気を使ってよく作られているのだろう！

I saw Totoro with a 4 year-old child of my friend the other day. It has been a really long time (more than 10 years) since I saw it last time. I was completely knocked out by the movie - what a charming and well made (with care for details!) animation it is!



この映画の舞台になっているのは、５０年ほど昔の東京近郊です。当時は緑一色の自然豊かな田舎でしたが、今はもちろんコンクリートとアスファルトで覆われています。こういう場所を実際知らなくても懐かしく感じてしまうような所です。日本人でなくても、そうみたいなんです。なんだか強く惹かれて、ああ、ここに帰りたい、と思うそうです。

The country side, which is the suburbia of Tokyo as of 50 years ago or so (now covered with concrete and asphalt), so green and warm, and you feel nostalgic even if you don't know any place like that personally. Even a non-Japanese person who has never been to such a place says they feel this special kind of affinity and longing to 'go back' to place like that.



世界中どこでも、子供はトトロが大好きです。”魔女の宅急便”も人気がありますね。この、スタジオ ジブリ マジックは何なのでしょう？大人からも愛されてますし。ジブリ映画は、小さい子をもつ親からとても感謝されています。というのも、ディズニーなどと比べて、何百回とリピートされても苦にならないらしい。日本語の教材としても一品です。例えばこの女の子、かわいい日本語を連発してました。「さんぽ！」「歩こう！」「どんぐり〜！」

Kids love Totoro, as well as Kiki (from "Kiki's Delivery Service'), all over the world. What is it about Miyazaki movies? Even adults like them. My friends who have kids thank Miyazaki for rescuing their life from DIsney movies - they say Miyazaki movies are easier to see 1000 times than other animations. It apparently is the best Japanese lesson kids can have; the little girl I saw it together kept talking to me in Japanese! "Sanpo!" "Arukou!" "Donguri~!"

映画 "The Linguists"

"The Linguists"は二人の言語学者が消えかけている言語を記録しようと世界中を旅する様を撮ったドキュメンタリー映画です。若手学者の K. David Harrison と Greg Anderson が、世界中で最も危なかったり隔離されたりしている場所に、亡くなりつつある言葉をせめて記録に残すべく繰り出していきます。世界で７０００ある言葉のうち、その半分近くに絶滅の危機があるとか。

"The Linguists" is a documentary of two linguistic professors' adventure to record dying languages around the globe. K. David Harrison and Greg Anderson went to some of the most remote and dangerous areas to 'preserve' languages that are en route to extinction. They say 40% of 7000 languages existing today are considered endangered. Every two weeks one is lost forever.

この題材は、個人的にとても興味があります。（例えば方言など大好きで、『方言を守る会』なんて結成した事もあるぐらい。と、いっても、ただ単に色んな人に標準語で話さないようにけしかけていただけだけど。笑）でも、言語に興味がなくてもかなり楽しめる映画だそうです。本物の情熱と理由がちゃんとある冒険を描いた映画、ということで、架空のアクションよりかなり入り込めるとか。タイトルの下にある、『本当の外国語映画』、というのがいいですね。（外国語で作られた映画をオスカーなどではそう呼ぶのです。でも英語としては、外国語を題材とした映画、という意味のほうが正しいのです。）この映画、かなり観たい！

It is a fascinating topic - language is one of my all time interest (I love dialects and feel quite passionate about keeping them alive, for example!). But even for people who are not as thrilled about language raider action as I am, this movie seems to be quite entertaining as an adventure movie with passion and purpose. I like their subtitle: the very foreign language film. (laugh) I really want to see this movie!

Heath Ledger

俳優や有名人に黄色い声を上げる（って、死語ですか？）ことはそんなにないのですが、Heath Ledger 君には思いきりはまっていました。繊細さと男らしさがうまく混ざっていて独特の雰囲気なのに、おふざけから真剣なものどんな役柄もすっぽり入り込んでこなしてしまう。いつも彼の次の映画を楽しみにしていましたが、去年の一月、２８歳の若さでの早すぎる死をニュースで聞く事になりました。

I don't often become obsessed with actors and celebrities and so forth, but I was a fan of Heath Ledger. He had this sensitive yet masculine mood, which was so distinctive. Yet he could slip into any role, silly to serious, like his own skin. I was always looking forward to his next film. Then I saw the news on his too early death at age of 28 last January.


そんな彼は昨日、アカデミー賞を取りました。こんな形で才能が公に認めらることもあるのですね。わたしは今でも銀幕界にいなくなってしまった彼の存在が恋しいです。

Yesterday he won Academy Award. I guess this was one way his talent could be recognized. I still miss the presence of him in the movie world!


ところで、わたしは Michelle Williams と一緒にいる彼がとても好きでした。カップルのファンって、変ですよねえ。（笑）あの二人、なんだかとってもかわいらしかったのです。両方とも、俳優さんとして大好きだし。（彼女の新作、『Wendy and Lucy』早く観たい．．．）

By the way, I liked seeing him with the mother of his child Michelle Williams. Isn't it a bit odd to be a fan of a couple? I thought they were very cute together. And I like both of them as actors! (Want to see her new film "Wendy and Lucy" very much...)

Once は、去年見た映画の中で特に楽しめたもののひとつです。アイルランドの首都ダブリンを舞台に、失恋を引きずって毎日を淡々と暮らすストリートミュージシャンが、音楽の才能があるのに家庭の事情でそれどころではない移民の女の子に出会い一新復帰する数日間を描いた、独特のミュージカルです。

主役の二人は本業が歌手の素人俳優だったのですが、その初々しさが逆に現実的というか、微笑ましくて好感が持てました。手カメラで撮ったような画像がまた温かいというか。ロックバンド（The Frames というアイルランドのインディーズバンド) のヴォーカルと、クラッシック色の強い若い女の子のデュエットは、意外な組み合わせが逆にしっくりといい感じでした。主役の二人が初めて一緒に演奏するシーン、良かったですねえ。歌われていたのは、”Falling Slowly” です。下に貼付けてみました。

映画 ”Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”

好きな俳優はと訊かれればためらいなく Paul Newman！と答えるようになってずいぶん経ちますが、”Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” を初めて見たのはつい最近の事です。そう、最愛なるポールさんが亡くなり、追悼集中視聴会を催していたときのこと。（ただ何作か集中してみたという事です、ご心配なく！笑）
感想は：とてもおもしろくて、びっくりしました。

Paul Newman と Robert Redford が、実在した西部の荒くれ者コンビ、ブッチとサンダンスを演じます。二人ともすごく楽しそうだし、息もぴったり。シリアスでいながら、ユーモアが散りばめられていて、西部劇なのに、コメディーのようで、独自のジャンルを築いています。西部劇を初めて崩した当時としてはスキャンダラスな作品、ときいたことがあるような。


主演の二人は、その後何度も共演し、ハリウッドでも有名な友人コンビになったらしい。（でも、そのやり取りは、結構過激にドライで、ああ、男の友情．．．）二人にとって、この映画がどれほど特別だったのかは、それぞれが立ち上げたチャリティーの名前をこの映画にちなんでいる事からもよくわかります。（Paul Newman が始めた末期がん患者の子供たちのキャンプ施設は、Hole in the Wall、 と、ブッチたちのギャングの名称で呼ばれ、 Robert Redford は、インディペンデント映画祭を始め、Sundance と名付けました。）

これ、１９６９年作、つまり４０年前の映画なんです。信じられないくらい、今見ても新鮮です。お勧めです！

Objectified

生活とデザインに関するドキュメンタリー映画、"Objectified"（日本語に無理矢理訳すると『モノにする』でしょうか。個人的には意訳で『モノごころ』あたりがいいような気がするけれど．．．）のトレイラーです。うーん、楽しみだ〜、観たいな〜、でもアメリカ以外では無理そう．．．どうでしょう？２００９年春公開らしいですが。
